Woman dies in custody at Denver County Jail on Friday

A woman died in custody at the Denver County Jail Friday afternoon.

The woman, who was in the custody of the Denver Sheriff Department, was discovered to be non-responsive in a housing unit at about 2:40 p.m. Friday, according to a news release sent by the department.

Upon discovery, a medical emergency team was called in and performed life-saving efforts on the woman, though she was pronounced dead shortly after, the release says.

The department will conduct an internal investigation into the death, as per protocol, according to the release.

Police noted that they were limited in the additional information they could provide about the incident, as to ensure the investigation would not be compromised, and did not respond to follow-up questions.

The woman’s identity, cause of death and notice to her family will be made by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
