Sunrise Openings set for Pikes Peak Highway

The easiest way to catch a sunrise on a 14,000-foot peak in Colorado? Via the Pikes Peak Highway on certain days coming up.

The highway’s gate will be lifted early July 12 and 18 — the first Sunrise Openings that only come around every so often .

Starting at 4:30 a.m. those days, drivers can head up to the mountaintop to watch the sun break over the plains and cast the surrounding foothills in a warm glow. Also warm: the famous doughnuts that will be sold in the Summit Visitor Center.

If one would rather not drive, sunrise shuttles will leave from the North Pole Parking lot, located 0.3 miles before the Pikes Peak entrance.

After July, the next Sunrise Openings are scheduled for Aug. 1, Sept. 27 and Oct. 13.

A $2 timed-entry permit is required, purchased online in advance, along with admission fees. Tickets are $18 for adults (ages 16 and older) and $8 for kids (6-15), or a carload of up to five passengers is $65.
