Colorado Avalanche agree to terms on 1-year contract with veteran defenseman Brent Burns
The Colorado Avalanche have their “veteran chasing his first Stanley Cup.”
On Wednesday, the organization announced they had agreed to terms on a one-year contract with 40-year-old defenseman Brent Burns. NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman says that Burns will make a base salary of $1 million and can earn another $3 million in games-played bonuses.
Even at 40, Burns has shown the ability to eat up valuable minutes, as he finished second on the Carolina Hurricanes in average time-on-ice per game last season. He’ll likely have a bit of a smaller role on the Avalanche but can still impact the game, particularly on the penalty kill, where he excelled in Carolina. The veteran is three games shy of hitting 1,500 in his career and has played in 925 consecutive regular season games.
Burns finished last season with six goals and 23 assists and was a +7 playing mostly with Colorado native Jaccob Slavin. One of Burns’ specialties is getting pucks through to the net from the point, something that the likes of Valeri Nichushkin, Gabriel Landeskog, and Artturi Lehkonen will really enjoy.
With Burns under contract, the Avalanche now have seven NHL defensemen on their roster, with four of them being right-handed.
