Hawaii’s “Big Island” police are investigating the possible drowning of a 51-year-old male visitor that occurred Monday afternoon in Hilo.
The man, identified as Greg Durocher of Castle Rock, Colorado, was visiting the island with his family.
At around 12:28 p.m. South Hilo patrol officers and Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to Waiolena Beach Park after receiving a report of a possible drowning.
During their investigation, officers say they learned that Durocher was participating in scuba diving lessons with his family and was in the water for approximately 38 minutes before returning to shore.
Durocher complained of having difficulty breathing and then became unresponsive shortly after.
The dive master and Durocher’s family began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on shore, where Hawaii Fire Department medics met them.
Medical responders continued treatment and transported Durocher to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted.
A coroner is working to determine the exact cause of death, but police say no foul play is suspected.
