Fourth of July fireworks spark two house fires in south metro Denver
First responders in south metro Denver were busy this weekend, battling two separate house fires sparked within an hour of each other by improperly discarded fireworks after Fourth of July celebrations.
South Metro Fire Rescue officials said firefighters responded to two house fires: one just after midnight in unincorporated Douglas County and one at 12:45 a.m. in Littleton early Saturday morning. First responders blamed improperly discarded fireworks as the cause for the fires.
No injuries were reported in the two fires. However, both fires caused extensive damage to the home, resulting in residents there being displaced, according to the fire department.
The first fire occurred just after midnight at 5268 S. Crocker Way, where SMFR firefighters responded and Littleton police officers evacuated everyone safely outside the burning home. A cat was located inside and saved, according to fire officials.
“Due to charring in the attic space above the garage, firefighters opened up the ceiling throughout the house checking for extension,” SMFR officials said in statement on social media.
Less than 45 minutes later, a second fire happened at 15587 Pebblewood Court in unincorporated Douglas County. There, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies evacuated occupants inside the home and nearby neighbors, while a separate SMFR engine arrived on-scene, according to officials.
Firefighters rescued multiple dogs and two cats, SMFR officials said.
A vehicle inside the garage also caught on fire in the Pebblewood Court blaze.
Four Douglas County deputies did receive treatment on-scene for smoke inhalation and have recovered, according to the fire department.
“Fireworks may look harmless when extinguished, but leftover embers can reignite,” Douglas County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a statement. “Never store used fireworks in your home or in plastic bins.”
Some area fire departments, including West Metro Fire, experienced an uptick in emergency response calls on Saturday night, according to Denver Gazette news partner 9NEWS.
