Dead campers identified as father and son at remote national park in Michigan
Two campers found deceased on Michigan’s Isle Royale have been identified, according to local news source FOX 9.
The campers have been identified as father and son 60-year-old John Baird and 30-year-old Bradley Baird, both with a listed address in Salem Township near Detroit.
The bodies of the men were found on June 8, and while officials have been notably sparse in releasing details related to the case, the case has gotten plenty of attention online thanks to a Redditor’s report of violent screams at the South Lake Desor campground – where the bodies were found – prior to the discovery of the bodies. This post coupled with the lack of detail released by officials prompted plenty of online speculation.
On June 25, local news source M Live reported that a murder-suicide was suspected to be the cause of death according to a medical examiner, though at that time, it was unclear who died first. An update on that detail has not yet been released.
Additional information in the case may be published in upcoming days and weeks. There is not believed to be any sort of threat to the public related to the case.
Isle Royale National Park is one of the least-crowded national parks in the country. It’s quite large, stretching 45 miles long and nine miles wide, with little-to-no development in much of its vast area. It’s only accessible via ferry, boat, or seaplane, adding to its sense of isolation and remoteness with a reported 28,874 people visiting in 2024. Open between April 16 and October 31 (199 days) each year, that accounts for an average of about 145 people per day during the operational period.
Condolences go out to those impacted by these deaths.
