This weekend, it’ll be the cyclists’ turn to claim their share of the road.
As part of the Triple Bypass bike tour taking place on Saturday, nearly 4,000 bicyclists will be traveling on roadways near Interstate 70 from Evergreen to Avon, according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
With the bicyclists traveling over Loveland Pass, U.S. 6 will be closed to motor vehicles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the department said. The closure will require all traffic to be stopped at tunnel entrances during that time frame.
Because of the closure, trucks carrying hazardous materials will be permitted through the Eisenhower/Johnston Tunnels. Those traveling westbound will receive an escort in the top of the hour and those traveling eastward will be escorted through the tunnels at the bottom of the hour.
In addition to U.S. 6, other roadways will be closed for the tour at different points on Saturday. The additional closures are listed as follows:
- 5-10 a.m.: Highway 103 westbound from Bergen Park to Idaho Springs, local traffic permitted
- 6:30-11 a.m.: Highway 103 eastbound from Idaho Springs to Bergen Park, local traffic permitted
- 6 a.m.-noon: Alvarado Road eastbound and westbound between Lawson and the Easter Seals Camp, local traffic permitted
- 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Swan Mountain Road westbound
There will not be any closures on Interstate 70, though drivers should be wary of the additional bicyclists on the frontage roads through Vail and U.S. 6 between Dowd Junction and Avon, the department said.
Drivers should be mindful about giving bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing, even if they need to cross the center line to do so, CDOT said. Bicyclists are also asked to stay as far on the right-hand side of the road as possible and not interrupt other traffic when passing other riders.
