A King Soopers store is closing in Centennial.
The grocery chain notified the worker’s union that it will close its location on the intersection of Arapahoe Road and Holly Street.
A spokesperson for King Soopers confirmed the store closure with The Denver Gazette.
“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close our 5050 E. Arapahoe Road store,” the spokesperson said in an email. “While we are leaving this location, we will offer each impacted associate the opportunity to transfer to a new location.”
The store in Centennial will close on Aug. 16, according to King Soopers.
The closure is part of a wider company decision from Kroger, the Cincinnati-based parent company of King Soopers.
Kroger announced it would close about 60 underperforming stores within 18 months across the nation in its earnings report released last month.
At the time, Kroger didn’t release a list of which stores would be affected.
The Centennial store at 5050 E. Arapahoe Road is the first known store in Colorado included in this wave of closures.
It comes on the heels of Kroger’s failed merger with Albertsons, which would have been the largest grocery store merger in the U.S. Yet the grocery chains couldn’t convince federal courts in two states that the deal wouldn’t create a monopoly and both filed lawsuits against each other over the merger’s collapse.
Company executives testified during several court cases – including in Colorado – that a failed merger would lead to store closures.
But during the company’s most recent earnings call, Kroger’s interim CEO said the grocer paused closing down stores that didn’t perform well enough in annual reviews during its legal proceedings.
“We deferred closing any stores due to the merger process,” said Ronald Sargent, Kroger’s interim CEO. “So, we see this as an opportunity to move these closed store sales to other stores. And we think that we should improve profitability.”
