Planning your next trip for Colorado wildflowers? The tourism office at one of the state’s top destinations is here to help.

In partnership with local naturalists, Breckenridge Tourism Office this season launched Breckenridge Wildflower Watch. Take it from one of those naturalists, who speaks in a promotional video: “To view more information about where and when and what trails to see the most wonderful wildflowers at, visit gobreck.com or the B Like Breckenridge app.”

The website and app are providing regular updates though the summer, as blooms spread across various terrain. For late July: “The wildflower display hits full stride at higher elevations and alpine basins,” the website reads.

At last check, trails such as Mayflower Gulch and Upper Mohawk Lakes were recommended for “stunning fields of alpine sunflowers, elephant’s head, sky pilot and queen’s crown.” The timing could be good also for meadows around Illinois Creek and Cucumber Gulch, the site suggested: “Fireweed is just beginning its bloom, with tall spokes of bright purple that can’t be missed.”

In early August, wildflowers are known to “still dazzle” above treeline, according to the site, which makes more recommendations: Crystal Lakes and Black Powder Pass. Among flowers to find: elephant’s head, paintbrush, gentians, purple asters, more fireweed and late-blooming columbine.

In late August, “wildflowers begin to fade, but patches of color remain at higher elevations,” the website reads. Along with French Gulch and Spruce Creek, Blue Lakes Trail is listed as “another great spot.”

Now through early next month, local naturalists offer daily guided hikes focused on flora and fauna. Several are scheduled for Cucumber Gulch Preserve, as seen on the calendar posted at breckost.com/events.
