Alpine Rescue Team, operating out of Evergreen, responded to a call for help in the area of popular hiking destination Saint Mary’s Glacier on July 23 after a hiker took a big fall.

According to a report about the situation, the call came in at about noon, involving a person who had sustained significant injuries after falling 200 feet down steep snow.

Alpine Rescue Team responded, along with personnel from Clear Creek Sheriff’s Office, Clear Creek EMS, and Clear Creek Fire Authority. The hiker was reached and due to the extent of injuries that were sustained, a Flight For Life evacuation was requested.

Crews were able to successfully complete 200 feet of technical scree evacuation, reaching the area of willows found above the nearby lake. The rescue subject was then loaded into the helicopter and transported for additional medical care.

If you’re interested in supporting Colorado’s volunteer-powered search and rescue operation, one way to do so is through the purchase of a CORSAR card. It’s cheap, at only $5 per year. Making individual donations directly to a specific search and rescue team is also a great way to support this effort.
