Broncos not putting timeline on stadium decision or location, team president Damani Leech says
ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos are not tipping their hand when it comes to stadium decisions.
Team president Damani Leech addressed reporters on Saturday before training camp practice at Broncos Park. He declined to provide specific updates on the possible location or timeline for constructing a new stadium. He also left the door open for renovations at Empower Field at Mile High.
“We’re certainly aware of all the media coverage here recently. I think we share in the excitement and interest that is generated among the fans,” Leech said. “It’s good for us to learn what some of the fans say and hear in response to some of those media reports. But no, I wouldn’t say any decision has been made. It’s a very comprehensive, long-term process that we’re going through. We’re trying to be very deliberate about it.
“There’s still no determination whether it’s a new stadium or whether it’s a renovation or the location that it’s in (currently). A lot of work to go.”
A series of land deals near Burnham Yard — Denver’s historic rail yard south of Colfax Avenue and east of Interstate 25 — have been tied to the Broncos for a potential new stadium. However, Leech said the team has “not made any decisions about preferred sites.”
The team’s lease to play games at Empower Filed at Mile high ends following the 2030 season.
“We’re not going to put a timetable on it,” Leech said. “This is a 30, 40, 50-year decision that we don’t want to rush by a matter of weeks here or there. We’re going to continue to do our due diligence until we feel like we’re in the position to make the right decision.”
Training facility update
The Broncos are making fast progress on a new training facility.
Construction is ongoing, just west of the team’s current facility, in the background of training camp.
“We have the topping out ceremony that will be in August, which is the highest beam (placement),” Leech said. “We’ll enclose the building by November, so from a weather standpoint they’ll be able to do all the interiors and get us to a situation where we’re able to move in by May of next year.”
Gase at practice
Adam Gase has been a practice visitor over the course of training camp.
Gase is formerly head coach of the Dolphins (2016-18) and Jets (2019-20). He also served as the Broncos offensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014.
“His father-in-law is (senior defensive assistant) Joe Vitt and so it’s good to see him out here,” coach Sean Payton said following Saturday practice. “I know he worked here for quite some time. He’s not helping in any official capacity or anything like that but he’s welcome to come out. He’s always been a good resource. Someone that has seen a lot of football.”
Jones on Barron
Sixth-year safety Brandon Jones is already impressed with rookie defensive back Jahdae Barron.
“It’s hard to realize he’s a rookie just because of his mindset and how smart and intelligent he is,” Jones said on Friday. “He flies around, and he always asks a lot of good questions. … He’s always asking the right questions, super athletic, and he’s always around the ball. He’s been a super great addition.”
