Denver Water launches ‘Splashstreet Boys’ boy band parody to highlight water use

Splashstreet Boys

Denver Water may have just released what might be the cringiest music video ever — though the agency hopes residents won’t have to cringe when they receive their next water bill.

The video, released by Denver Water’s boy band “Splashstreet Boys,” is called “Water Tuesday (Splashstreet’s Back).”

The Splashstreet Boys is a parody of the 1990s boy band, the Backstreet Boys.

This latest video is a follow-up to last year’s parody music video “I Water That Way,” which the Backstreet Boys responded to on social media, commenting, “You guys NAILED this” on Instagram.

The Splashstreet Boys’ primary message to Denver Water customers is for outdoor water users to switch irrigation timers from Mondays and Wednesdays to Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Denver Water noted that on a majority of sprinkler systems, the default watering days are set to Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.

However, when most households use water simultaneously on the same day, these spikes in water use cause an unsustainable strain on Denver Water’s distribution system, the agency said.

This strain, in turn, leads to higher energy costs, while testing the capacity limits of Denver Water’s treatment plants and storage facilities around the Denver metro area.

Denver Water said it may eventually be required to build costly new infrastructure to meet this demand.

Denver Water urges its customers to follow these watering rules between May 1. and Oct. 1.

  • Water during cooler times of the day — lawn watering is NOT allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

  • Water twice a week, adding a third day only when necessary. (Watering more than three days is not allowed.)

  • Do not allow water to pool in gutters, streets and alleys.

  • Do not waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt.

  • Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.

  • Do not irrigate while it is raining or during high winds.

  • Use a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve when washing your car.

Whether or not Denver Water’s version of the Backstreet Boys song goes viral, the organization is hopeful that the messaging sticks.

“We’ve talked publicly about this issue for a while now, but we haven’t yet seen the results we need to alleviate pressures on our system,” said Greg Fisher, Denver Water’s manager of demand planning. “So, we decided to call in some reinforcements to sing and dance the message into people’s minds: Switch your irrigation clock to Tuesdays and Thursdays and help take care of your water system.”

Denver Water is Colorado’s oldest and largest water utility, supplying high-quality water to 1.5 million residents in Denver and surrounding suburbs. Founded in 1918, the agency is publicly operated and funded through water rates, tap fees and hydropower sales rather than taxes, according to its website.
