Portion of national park closed by Colorado wildfire set to reopen
While the South Rim Fire that was sparked by lightning on July 10 at Black Canyon of the Gunnison remains active, some portions of the park are set to reopen soon.
As of July 28, the South Rim Fire has torched about 4,232 acres at the popular outdoor recreation destination, with firefighters having gained roughly 41 percent containment on the blaze. With firefighting operations are still underway on the South Rim of the canyon, the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is set to reopen to the public on July 30.
Once this area reopens, visitors will be able to access trails, overlooks, and the North Rim Campground, which has 13 camping sites and operates on a first-come, first-served bases.
While the North Rim area is generally considered to be the quieter, less-trafficked, and more primitive side of the national park, staff will be present at the North Rim ranger station to assist visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. once this area reopens.
The estimated containment date for the South Rim Fire is currently set for August 10.
