A former psychologist for Jeffco Public Schools pleaded not guilty to charges including sexual assault on a child less than 15 years old.
James Michael Chevrier, 38, pleaded not guilty on Monday in a Jefferson County district court to charges of child sexual assault, soliciting for child sexual prostitution, two counts of possession with intent to sell drugs and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
The not guilty plea comes more than two months after Chevrier was arrested by the Lakewood Police Department on May 13.
Chevrier — a former high school psychologist at Green Mountain High School and Bear Creek High School — was reported to Safe2Tell, an anonymous reporting system for staff and students, at the beginning of May. The report claimed that a Green Mountain High School psychologist sexually assaulted a female student.
An investigation into the defendant began on May 9, ultimately resulting in his arrest and the filing of four felony charges and two misdemeanors.
Chevrier also worked as a staff member at Evergreen High School between 2022 and 2023 and the Cherry Creek School District between 2021 and 2022.
He was placed on administrative leave by the district at the beginning of the investigation, according to a letter sent to Green Mountain High School families.
The district attorney’s office is planning to drop charges against Chevrier for having cocaine on him during his arrest, but it is looking into possible additional charges regarding DMT and MDMA allegedly found during investigations, according to the office.
The defendant remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond and is set for a jury trial on Jan. 5.
Chevrier had no prior criminal charges in Colorado. The Denver Gazette reached out to his defense attorney Bryan Rose, but did not hear back by the time of this report.
Chevrier’s case was the most recent in six arrests or investigations regarding sexual assault on a child or related misconduct in Jefferson County Public Schools since the end of 2023.
The array of investigations and cases struck the Jeffco Public Schools community, leading to multiple school board discussions regarding Superintendent Tracy Dorland’s leadership and contract.
The Department of Education also announced an investigation to mark the 53rd anniversary of Title IX in the beginning of June. The investigation will be looking into two separate Jeffco schools for allegedly violating federal law protecting women’s space.
Dorland still remains the superintendent as of July.
