Rockies again trade with Yankees, send relief pitcher to New York before MLB trade deadline

Another day, another reliever traded away by the Colorado Rockies.

Hours before the 2025 MLB trade deadline at 4 p.m. Thursday, the Rockies reportedly made another deal with the New York Yankees, sending reliever Jake Bird to the Bronx.

The trade came just six days after the Rockies sent third baseman Ryan McMahon to the Yankees in exchange for two minor-league pitchers.

In the return for Bird, the Rockies received second baseman Roc Riggio, ranked as the 10th-best prospect in the Yankees organization. Playing at the Double-A level when the trade occurred, the 23-year-old Riggio was slashing .261/.335/.542 in 153 at-bats at that level.

Also coming to Colorado is 26-year-old left-hander Ben Shields, ranked as New York’s 28th-best prospect. Like Riggio, Shields advanced to Double-A and had made five starts there, posting a 3.42 ERA while opponents had hit .232 against him.

Bird entered Thursday with a 4-1 record and 4.73 ERA on the season. The 29-year-old right-hander had allowed runs in 10 of his last 17 games since June 13, logging a 13.20 during that stretch. Prior to that, he had a 1.41 ERA through his first 28 appearances of the season.
