Talanoa Hufanga makes highlight reel interception against Bo Nix | Broncos training camp Day 7

Camp

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Friday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Play of the day

Talanoa Hufanga made arguably the most impressive play of training camp to date. The Broncos safety, signed in free agency, intercepted quarterback Bo Nix near the line of scrimmage. Hufanga showed off his impressive vertical jump to rise up and snag the football.

Coach Sean Payton said: “If you really looked at (Hufanga’s) distance from the throw, I’ll bet it was like eight yards. So, to be able to go up and catch that with a crowded look in front of him … that play was sick.”

It was the first of two Nix interceptions during practice. He previously had not thrown a pick in camp.

Position battle

Wide receiver: Several depth wide receivers are making a strong case to join the practice squad. Michael Bandy, Joaquin Davis, Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton and Kyrese Rowan are all taking advantage of their opportunities in team periods. The rest of training camp should provide chances for certain wideouts to separate themselves from the group.

Stock rising

CB Pat Surtain: The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year intercepted a Nix deep ball in the end zone that was intended for wide receiver Courtland Sutton during 11-on-11 play. Payton described it as a ball placement issue for Nix. Surtain still rose to the occasion to make the play. He’s been solid in training camp under the weight of heavy expectations in 2025.

Mark Kiszla: No joke. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey could put an end to Broncos' laughable running attack

Stock falling

Second-team offense: Payton stopped practice during an 11-on-11 period after the second-team offense committed three consecutive pre-snap penalties. Backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham struggled to get his unit on the same page. It led to Payton pulling that unit in favor of the third-team offense with quarterback Sam Ehlinger to finish out the period.

Attendance check

The Broncos signed inside linebacker Garret Wallow and he participated in Friday practice. Denver waived cornerback Mario Goodrich, who had played during the spring with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

Injury report

Inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw watched practice on Friday. Payton said that he felt a tweak and “fortunately, the scans were good.” He is anticipated to practice next week.

Rookie outside linebacker Que Robinson viewed practice wearing a brace on his right leg. Payton said he is dealing with a “bone bruise” and is expected to rejoin practice Monday.

Inside linebacker Alex Singleton watched practice again with a cast on his left hand.

Wide receiver A.T. Perry viewed practice while on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).
