Where good news shines
Air Force’s Luke Freer is one of the best punters in college football.
A senior from Fairhope, Ala., Freer was named on Friday to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, an honor that recognizes the best punter in the country. Freer also was a preseason All-Mountain West first-team selection — one season after he earned second-year honors.
He averaged 47.5 yards per punt last season, an Air Force record, breaking Mark Simon’s mark of 47.3 in 1985. The Falcons didn’t punt often, so Freer did not have enough attempts to qualify for national rankings. Otherwise, he would have ranked fourth.
Air Force opens the season Saturday, Aug. 30, vs. Bucknell at Falcon Stadium.
