A 16-year-old boy died Friday night after he was hit by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter in a marked bicycle lane.
Police first responded to reports of an auto-pedestrian crash resulting in serious injuries at the intersection of East Wesley Drive and South Dunkirk Street in Aurora just after 11:15 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
When officers arrived, they found the teen, who had lost consciousness from the crash, police said. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The initial investigation has found the teen was riding the scooter north on East Wesley Drive in a marked bicycle lane when he was hit from behind by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, authorities said. The vehicle then sped away from the area, likely driving north on South Dunkirk Street in the direction of East Jewell Avenue.
Residents in the area told authorities they heard a vehicle with a loud exhaust speed away from the area at about the time the crash took place, though there were no direct witnesses of the crash, police said.
There is no suspect vehicle information at this time, though investigators are asking residents in the area of East Wesley Drive and South Dunkirk Street to check any exterior doorbell or security cameras for video of a possible suspect vehicle between 11:15 and 11:20 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
