Coroner unable to determine how Denver transgender hairstylist died
The Jefferson County Coroner could not determine the exact cause and manner of Jax Gratton’s death in the autopsy report released Thursday morning.
Coroner John Carver wrote that Gratton’s body had decomposed too much by the time the autopsy was completed to accurately prove or rule out multiple possible mechanisms of death, according to the report.
“Given these uncertainties, the cause and manner of death are undetermined,” Carver wrote.
Gratton — a 34-year-old transgender hairstylist from Denver — was found dead in a Lakewood alleyway in the 9600 block of West Colfax Avenue on June 6. The body was reportedly in advanced stages of decomposition. Authorities labeled the death as “suspicious” but did not elaborate.
Carver performed the autopsy two days later, according to the report.
Carver notes in the report outside fractures on two of Gratton’s left ribs, but couldn’t say for certain whether Gratton fell from a significant height or was dropped after death.
Toxicology studies on Gratton’s liver tissue also detected traces of methamphetamine and marijuana. The report also mentions that the investigation indicated that Gratton had used gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, also known as GHB, prior to last being seen alive.
The drug, sometimes referred to as “liquid ecstasy,” gained notoriety in the 1990s as a date rape substance, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It can be taken in combination with other drugs, including marijuana and can increase the central nervous system effects of alcohol and other depressants.
“The Coroner Report only demonstrates the reason why we have to fight for Jax,” Gratton’s mother, Cherilynne Gratton-Camis, said in a Facebook post Wednesday night.
The report also detailed what authorities believe are the circumstances leading up to the victim’s death, saying that Gratton had gone to an apartment on April 15 with a man — the two had a history of sexual encounters with one another — where they were joined by another man and used GHB.
Gratton reportedly vomited after using the drug; the men then propped Gratton up before leaving the apartment, the report says. When they returned, the victim was no longer there.
Gratton-Camis reported her child missing nine days later. Police found Gratton’s body over a month afterward, on the ground directly below the apartment’s second-story window, the report says.
Lakewood Police Department officials declined to comment on the report, citing its ongoing investigation into Gratton’s death.
