Peña Boulevard speeding a ‘significant issue,’ Denver police say

Pena

The Denver International Airport Traffic Unit has identified speeding as a “significant issue” on Peña Boulevard the Denver Police Department said Tuesday.

Five drivers exceeding the speed limit by a large margin were issued citations by Denver Police Cpl. Hamel alone in the last two weeks, according to police.

Those incidents included drivers going anywhere from 92-99 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone.

DPD’s DIA Traffic Unit has issued nine tickets for speeds over 100 mph in the past four years, with the highest recorded speed at 124 mph.

In Colorado, speeding 25-39 mph over the limit is classified as a Class 2 traffic misdemeanor, mandating a court appearance.

Offenders can receive fines from $150 to $300 plus fees, and potential jail time of anywhere from 10-90 days, DPD said.

Speeders caught going 40 mph or more over the limit face a Class 1 misdemeanor, with penalties including a 12-point ticket that may lead to license suspension and up to a year in jail.

Officers urge drivers to follow posted speed limits to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.
