A Boulder man is dead following a glider crash that occurred Wednesday morning southwest of Berthoud, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a report at 8:40 a.m. of an aircraft crash in the 3600 block of West County Road 2, just shy of the Larimer-Boulder county line.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Berthoud Fire Protection District and Thompson Valley EMS officials all responded to the scene and found an ultralight glider that had crashed and caught on fire.
Firefighters worked to put the flame out, but found the man dead inside the glider.
Several power lines and poles in the area were damaged. Preliminary investigation indicates that the glider likely hit the electrical lines before coming to a halt on the dirt road, LCSO said.
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal crash, the exact cause remains under investigation.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the crash, but due to the type of glider, they determined that the investigation will remain with LCSO.
Fifty-five Poudre Valley REA members initially lost power as a result of the crash, but crews have restored electricity to all but three surrounding homes.
No other damage has been reported according to LCSO.
The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased man’s name, as well as the cause and manner of death, at a later time.
“Losing someone you care about is never easy, but a sudden loss like this is especially tough,” said LCSO Sgt. Justin Williamson, who leads the Berthoud squad. “We’ll keep this man’s family and our wider aviation community in our thoughts during the difficult days to come.”
Officials are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident, and has not already spoken to law enforcement to contact investigator Stephen Gates at 970-498-5169.
