Movie rundown for the weekend through Aug. 17: ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ opens

OPENING

“Americana” — (Action, R, 110 minutes). When a rare Lakota Ghost shirt lands on the black market, bloodshed ensues between the locals, outsiders and outcasts.

“Coolie” — (Action, not rated, 170 minutes). Driven by righting past wrongs, a man goes on a quest for vengeance.

“East of Wall” — (Drama, R, 97 minutes). After her husband dies, a young rebellious horse trainer named Tabatha opens her broken-down ranch in the Badlands to a group of wayward teenagers.

“The Grateful Dead Movie 2025 Meet-Up” — (Concert, not rated, 152). Celebrate the Grateful Dead’s legacy with concert footage from their concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October 1974.

“Highest 2 Lowest” — (Action, R, 133 minutes). A titan music mogul is caught up in a life-or-death moral situation when he is targeted with a ransom plot.

“Honey Don’t!” — (Comedy, R, 88 minutes). A small-town investigator named Honey O’Donahue investigates the strange deaths tied to a mysterious church.

“It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” — (Documentary, not rated, 106 minutes). Never-before-seen footage, with voice messages and accounts from the gifted musician’s inner circle, who tragically died in 1997 after releasing only one album.

“Jimmy and Stiggs” — (Horror, not rated, 90 minutes). Out-of-work filmmaker Jimmy Lang goes on a bender after some bad news and claims he was abducted by aliens. Fearing the aliens will return, he asks his friend Stiggs to help him gear up for war.

“Nobody 2” — (Action, R, 89 minutes). After stopping a home invasion, suburban dad and former assassin Hutch Mansell gets pulled back into his violent past and secrets about his wife and his life are revealed.

“War 2” — (Action, not rated, 170 minutes). Two lethal forces clash when India sends its deadliest operative to hunt down the country’s worst villain.

“Witchboard” — (Horror, R, 112 minutes). A cursed artifact draws a young couple into a deadly game of deception, possession and occult terror.

ONGOING

“The Bad Guys 2” — (Action, PG, 104 minutes). Grade: B, Mark Meszoros. Although the Bad Guys are now trying to live their lives as good guys, they are pulled out of retirement by an all-female squad of females named the Bad Girls to do one last job.

“Eddington” — (Comedy, R, 148 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. A standoff in 2020 between a small-town mayor and sheriff in Eddington, N.M, pits neighbors against neighbors.

“F1: The Movie” — (Drama, PG-13, 155 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. Sonny Hayes was Formula 1’s most promising driver until the 1990s, when an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he is coming out of retirement to mentor and team up with a hotshot rookie.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” — (Action, G-13, 115 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. The Fantastic Four must defend Earth while facing their most daunting challenge yet.

“Freakier Friday” — (Comedy, PG, 111 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Twenty-two years after they went through an identity crisis, Tess and Anna discover that lightning can strike twice, as Anna now faces the challenges of merging two families with her daughter and a stepdaughter.

“How to Train Your Dragon” — (Adventure, PG, 120 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. During a time when an ancient threat endangers dragons and Vikings on the isle of Berk, a friendship forms between Hiccup, an inventive Viking, and a Night Fury dragon named Toothless.

“Jurassic World: Rebirth” — (Adventure, PG-13, 134 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Five years after the events of “Jurassic World Dominion,” a team of operatives journeys to an isolated equatorial region in the hope of extracting DNA from three prehistoric creatures that will bring life-saving benefits to humankind.

“My Mother’s Wedding” — (Comedy, R, 95 minutes). With the help of some colorful, uninvited guests, three daughters who attend the wedding of their twice-widowed mother must face the past and confront the future.

“The Naked Gun” — (Comedy, PG-13, 85 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Following in his father’s footsteps, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. is chosen to lead the Police Squad and save the world..

“Shin Godzilla” (2025 Re-release in 4K) — (Adventure, PG-13, 120 minutes). The prime minister of Japan asks the public to remain calm when a large creature invades the city, leaving death and destruction. The situation worsens further when the creature evolves.

“Sketch” — (Adventure, PG, 92 minutes). A family must stop the monsters that are causing chaos in the town after a young girl’s sketchbook falls into a mysterious pond and her drawings come to life.

“Smurfs” — (Animated, PG, 92 minutes). Smurfette leads a mission into the real world to save Papa Smurf, who was kidnapped by evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel.

“Strange Harvest” — (Horror, R, 94 minutes). Detectives must find a sadistic serial killer from the past named Mr. Shiny before he can unleash a new wave of crimes that are tied to a dark cosmic force.

“Su from So” — (Comedy, not rated, 137 minutes). When a boy’s crush creates strange events, everyone in a quiet village believes he brought a ghost out with his feelings.

“Superman” — (Action, PG-13, 129 minutes). Grade: A-, Katie Walsh. In a world that views truth, justice and the human way as old-fashioned, Superman must try to integrate his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” 35th Anniversary — (Adventure, PG-13, 93 minutes). Four teenage mutant ninja turtles help protect New York City from a group of criminal ninjas.

“Together” — (Horror, R, 102 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. When Tim and Millie move to the country, they encounter an unnatural force that threatens their love, their flesh and their lives.

“Weapons” — (Horror, R, 128 minutes). Grade: A, Katie Walsh. A community is left wondering who or what caused all-but-one child from the same class to go missing on the same night at the same time.
