QB Bo Nix shines during joint practice with Cardinals | Broncos training camp Day 14

Broncos Camp Football

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos joint training camp practice Thursday against the Cardinals with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Plays of the day

—Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted quarterback Kyler Murray during a 7-on-7 drill early in practice. McMillian bounced back from getting beat on a previous throw during the period with an impressive vertical jump pick over a Cardinals passing target.

—Wide receiver Jerjuan Newton made a leaping catch down the sideline from quarterback Sam Ehlinger in 11-on-11 play. Newton battled through suspected pass interference to make a 50-yard reception. Ehlinger had excellent ball placement on the throw.

—Quarterback Bo Nix threw a perfect fade ball during 11-on-11 to wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Nix dropped the 10-yard catch into a bucket to allow Sutton to make an easy catch. The Nix-Sutton chemistry has been on display throughout training camp.

Position battle

Running back: The competition between reserve running backs Jaleel McLaughlin, Blake Watson, Tyler Badie and Audric Estime rolls into the second preseason game. It’s difficult to accurately judge the rushing game without full contact and tackling. That’s why Saturday night at Empower Field will help determine a clearer hierarchy in a deep position group.

Stock rising

QB Bo Nix: The second-year Broncos starter had arguably his best day of training camp. Nix spread the field to a wide variety of passing targets, showcased his mobility and avoided turnovers. It was a promising performance after Nix failed to gain much momentum over three series played in the preseason opener at the 49ers.

Stock falling

Tight end coverage: Cardinals TE Trey McBride — a Colorado native who starred at Colorado State — dominated 11-on-11 play against the Broncos defense. He caught several wide-open passes with plenty of run after the catch. The Broncos have historically struggled to defend tight ends. McBride is among the game’s brightest young stars at the position after signing a four-year, $76 million contract extension in April.

Attendance check

Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto missed a third consecutive practice with what coach Sean Payton confirmed as a “bone spur” the top of his foot. Bonitto had a minor procedure and could return to practice next week.

Inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw is dealing with “scar tissue” related to his quadriceps muscle injury, Payton said, and participated during individual drills. Greenlaw did not join team periods but his return is on the horizon.

Tight end Nate Adkins was absent again and underwent a “tightrope procedure” to address a high ankle sprain, Payton said. Adkins will miss games during the early portion of the season.

Injury report

Left tackle Garett Bolles left early and went into the ambulance next to the practice field. He emerged a short time later without pads and went into the team facility. Payton said Bolles had “some asthma and breathing” issues. But Bolles is expected to be OK, Payton said.

Fullback Michael Burton and cornerback Gregory Junior both left practice early and walked into the locker room with athletic trainers.
