7 notable musicians you’d probably recognize who have called Colorado home

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Stage

With truly unique and stunning venues to be found around the Centennial State, like Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, it’s no surprise that Colorado has served as the stage for many extraordinary local musicians.

Here’s a look at some of the most notable musicians who were born (or raised) in Colorado:

1. Philip Bailey

Philip Bailey, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame inductee, was born in Colorado on May 8, 1951. Bailey was a member of the group Earth, Wind & Fire and later went on to have a successful solo career.

2. Jesse Carmichael

Carmichael was born on April 2, 1979 in Boulder, Colorado. He is the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for the pop-rock band Maroon 5. Maroon 5 is known for songs like “Moves like Jagger,” “Sugar,” and “She Will Be Loved.”

3. Judy Collins

She wasn’t born in Colorado, but moved to Denver when she was only ten years old. Collins is a Grammy-award-winning singer and songwriter, known for songs like “Both Sides Now” and “Send in the Clowns.” Collins has also written several books, including her memoir, Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: My Life in Music.

4. Isaac Slade

Slade is a singer and musician, and was the lead vocalist and co-founder of The Fray. Slade was born in Boulder, Colorado, where the band was formed. The Fray earned multiple Grammy nominations.

5. Todd Park Mohr

Todd Park Mohr, of Big Head Todd and the Monsters, was born October 19, 1965 in Denver. The band Big Head Todd and the Monsters was formed in Boulder in 1986. The band has headlined Red Rocks Amphitheatre 35 times and has been inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

6. Nathaniel Motte and Sean Foreman (3OH!3)

Motte and Foreman make up the electropop duo 3OH!3 and are both from Boulder, Colorado. The band was formed in 2004 and named after the area code that once covered the entire state of Colorado.

7. John Denver

Although he wasn’t born in Colorado, a list of notable musicians from the state wouldn’t be complete without John Denver. Denver was born in New Mexico, but made Colorado his home later in life. He was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., but changed his name to the capital city of his favorite state – Colorado. Denver’s song “Rocky Mountain High” is one of Colorado’s two official state songs.
