Whether it’s trying deep-fried goodies, jamming to some music or stepping off a carnival ride smiling — the Colorado State Fair is back in action starting this upcoming weekend.

Hosted by the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and fair board, the Colorado State Fair this year is honoring the Pueblo Police Department as its grand marshal, plus one of the town’s late and devoted community members, who is named as this year’s parade marshal.

The late Ralph Williams, who organizers said embodied active involvement in the community, is this year’s parade marshal — in memoriam. Williams passed away in September last year.

Saturday’s parade sets the tone for this year’s theme: “Growing traditions.” The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday along Historic Union Avenue.

The Colorado State Fair this year begins Friday and lasts until Sept. 1.

In 2024, close to half a million attended the fair, according to organizers.

The fair features live shows, livestock, rodeos, exhibits, a variety of activities for kids, carnival rides and some affordable fair food.

Admission is $15 for adults, $7 for kids ages between 5 and 12; it’s free for kids 4 and under.

All day carnival passes are priced at $42 starting Saturday. Discounted carnival tickets are available online for $36 until then.

The Colorado State Fair parade is one of the state’s oldest celebrations. The fair itself began in 1872 and was fully incorporated as the state’s fair in 1886, when it purchased 50 acres of land for $3,000 and made $5,000 worth of improvements.

Today, the fairgrounds comprise 102 acres.

The Mexican Pavilion was the present day site’s first installment. When it was built, the pavilion also served as the police headquarters for the City of Pueblo.

The Colorado State Fair is home to 14 structures with historical significance.
