Denver weather: Air quality alert in effect Thursday as record heat looms

Denverites can expect sunny and hot conditions today, with a high near 98, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Light and variable winds to blow become northeast 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 16 mph.
An ozone action day is in effect until 4 p.m. for areas in Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer, and Weld Counties.
Hot, stagnant weather will allow ozone to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category through Thursday.

Tonight it’ll be partly cloudy, with a low around 65. East northeast winds between 5 to 10 mph become west southwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 16 mph.
Scattered to numerous showers and storms will be possible each day from Friday onward, with Friday and Monday having the highest coverage.
Plus high temperatures will remain below seasonal averages as cooler weather stays in place to the end of August.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 87. West southwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming north northeast in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
Saturday: A chance of showers before noon, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between noon and 3 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely after 3 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 83.
Monday: A chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71.
