“Did you lose your emu?”: Four days after first incident, another emu escapes Colorado home
In a case of deja vu, another emu has escaped its home in Colorado just days after a similar incident took place in Lakewood on August 18. Apparently, Centennial State emus are true escape artists.
According to a noon post on August 22 from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, a call was received earlier in the morning about an emu that was on the loose in the area of Camfield. With the help of a local resident, animal control personnel located and captured the massive bird on private property, slipping a horse lead around it and getting it into a trailer.
The emu was reportedly friendly, with authorities believing it to be someone’s pet. Unfortunately, there was no owner around, thus it’s unknown who that owner might be.
The emu has since be transported to a safe location to be returned to its owner once the owner is found. The sheriff’s office requested that the emu’s owner contact 970-356-4015 to discuss getting the bird back.
Believe it or not, emus are generally legal to own in Colorado provided no local laws prevent ownership and that other possible ownership criteria is met. That said, apparently this flightless bird can be difficult to hang on to – if you’re thinking about purchasing an emu, make sure you’ve got the right space to keep it safe.
