Trump floats Republican convention ahead of 2026 elections

President Donald Trump said Thursday that Republicans may take the unusual step of holding a convention ahead of the 2026 elections as both parties fight for control of Congress.

“We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms,” he continued.

The president did not provide details on the timing or location of the proposed convention, but normally, the gatherings are reserved for presidential election years, when Democrats and Republicans choose their candidate for the White House. Trump’s post comes as the Democratic National Committee weighs a “large-scale gathering” of its own.

“Americans everywhere are fired up and ready to fight back against Trump’s reckless policies — including his budget betrayal that cuts health care and food assistance for millions of people. To showcase our tremendous candidates running up and down the ballot and harness the amazing grassroots energy we’re already seeing, several options are on the table for next year, including hosting a large-scale gathering before the midterms,” DNC Deputy Communications Director Abhi Rahman told the Washington Examiner.

Democrats remain on defense in the House, with 41 seats rated competitive compared to the 29 marked competitive for the GOP. Democrats only need a net gain of three seats to flip the House. Historically, the party in power loses seats in a midterm election. The GOP, meanwhile, is favored to keep control of the upper chamber.

Last year’s RNC was held in Milwaukee, while the DNC held its in Chicago.
