A horse named Sweetie rescued from a mud hole in Boulder County
A horse stuck in mud is helped free by animal protection crews Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025 in rural Boulder County, Colorado.
A horse named Sweetie was rescued from mud in rural Boulder County on Thursday afternoon by animal protection units, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
At approximately 1:08 p.m., the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a horse immersed in mud and stuck in the 6200 block of Plateau Road, located just east of Altona in rural Boulder County.
According to the sheriff’s office, the property owner discovered his horse “Sweetie,” an adult Warmblood mare trapped in the mud. When he attempted to free the horse, he also became stuck and called out for help. A neighbor responded to the call for help and then alerted 911 to the situation.

Responders from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protection Unit, Emergency Services Unit, Boulder Fire Rescue, Boulder Rural Fire Rescue, and Boulder Emergency Squad arrived and worked together to safely free the horse.
A veterinarian from VetweRx was on scene and provided care during the rescue.
Sweetie was freed from the mud and continues to be evaluated by veterinary personnel.
