Tip leads to FBI arrest of double homicide suspect in north Denver Friday night
Days after the FBI announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a double homicide suspect, a tip led authorities to arrest him in north Denver Friday night.
Matthew Ladaniel Johnson, who has used different ages, 55 and 35, was arrested on suspicion of double homicide in connection with a shooting at a West Colfax bar at the end of 2023, the FBI and Denver Police Department said in a joint news conference on Thursday.

“This defendant will now have his day in court and the judicial process can begin,” said FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek in a news release Saturday. “We hope these efforts bring a measure of justice and relief to the families of the victims.”
The tipster was motivated by the news coverage of the reward, the FBI said in the Saturday release.
That night, Johnson allegedly shot four people, killing two, while on the patio of the Viking Bar on West Colfax Avenue at around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2023, according to the FBI. The incident began when an argument broke out between Johnson’s girlfriend and one of the victims.
After one of the victims knocked Johnson to the ground, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began shooting, authorities say. He was wanted on charges of first-degree murder and first degree criminal attempt to commit murder.
After over a year and a half had gone by since the incident, authorities called for renewed media attention of the case during the news conference with the hope that it would lead to Johnson’s arrest, they said. The FBI also raised the reward to $10,000 and planned to put up nearly 30 billboards around the Denver area with information about the case.
