Noem says there are ‘absolutely’ plans to deploy troops to high-crime red states

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed that cities in Republican-controlled states are also being evaluated for potential crime crackdowns, denying the administration’s actions are being done under “a political lens.”

The Trump administration is looking to target crime in Chicago after taking similar action in Washington, D.C., this month. Noem said on Sunday that the administration isn’t taking “anything off the table” with other cities like Boston or San Francisco, and is ensuring it has the resources and equipment needed.

The homeland security secretary also confirmed there are “absolutely” plans to enact a similar cleanup in Republican-led cities.

“Every single city is evaluated for what we need to do there to make it safer. So we’ve got operations that, again, I won’t talk about details on, but we absolutely are not looking through the viewpoint at anything we’re doing with a political lens,” Noem said on CBS News’s Face the Nation.

Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) called a possible deployment of troops into Chicago “an invasion,” suggesting President Donald Trump has ulterior motives related to upcoming elections. He also said National Guard troops don’t belong in the city “unless there is truly an emergency,” which he said there isn’t.

Trump recently called Pritzker “weak and pathetic” after a string of shootings in Chicago last weekend. He also said the Illinois governor “better straighten it [crime] out” soon, or the National Guard would be “coming” to the city.
