Will weather impact the Labor Day Lift Off?

The annual Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off did not quite launch into action as it kicked off this weekend. A low cloud ceiling grounded balloons — but did allow for them to inflate — on Friday’s media day event. On Saturday, the first official day of the festival, breezy weather also grounded the morning launch and an evening storm canceled the glow.

When it comes to weather conditions, a big launch factor is wind, which will be predominately from the south at around 2 to 9 mph during the three-day event.

Wind speeds must be below 8 mph on the surface, with zero rain or thunder, according to officials in previous Gazette reporting. There also must be enough visibility to see 5 miles.

Cloud cover will have to be evaluated the morning of the launches, according to Lauren DeMarco, marketing manager for Colorado Springs Sports Corp., which produces the event with Hot Apple Productions.

“Safety is our No. 1 thing with the balloons,” DeMarco told The Gazette. “They really are at the mercy of the winds and so our pilots are very well-versed and very talented.”

Highs of 77 and 79 are expected Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Rain or shine, DeMarco said there will be plenty of things to do and visit including 70 vendors, two beer gardens, live entertainment and the opportunity to engage with pilots, who each have trading cards.

If weather impacts the launch, DeMarco said the balloons will still try to inflate on the ground for a static display.

“We all want to put on an amazing event for the community and you know we’re feeling very positive and optimistic about everything,” DeMarco said.
