CU Buffs’ Deion Sanders says five-star freshman QB Julian ‘JuJu’ Lewis will play vs. Delaware

BOULDER — Get ready to see No. 10 in black and gold on Saturday at Folsom Field.

While he didn’t commit to starting Julian “JuJu” Lewis at quarterback, Colorado coach Deion Sanders said Tuesday the five-star freshman will see the field against Delaware in Week 2.

The Buffaloes are 23.5-point favorites against the Blue Hens. Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. with coverage on FOX.

“He’s playing this week for sure,” Sanders said. “I know when I’m gonna see him. You just don’t know when you’re gonna see him.”

Coach Prime said prior to a season-opening loss to against Georgia Tech he “hoped” to see Lewis, despite the fact that Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter was going to start. But with the game within one score throughout, the Buffs rode with Salter the entire time in a 27-20 defeat that dropped the team to 0-1 for the first time since Sanders took over.

With online backlash already starting for Pat Shurmur after just one game, Coach Prime defended an offensive coordinator that has been a source of displeasure in the area dating back to his time in the same role with the Broncos.

“It’s funny that you start out with Coach Shurmur and we gave up 300 yards — darn near 400 yards — rushing. It’s ironic, to me. It seems like you guys just pick and choose who you want to target. That’s cool,” Sanders said. “We didn’t lose the game because of Coach Shurmur, Coach (Robert) Livingston or one specific thing. I gotta do a better job in preparing my team, challenging my coaches to go to the next level. That’s on me.”

To Sanders, it wasn’t about missteps by the coaching staff — particularly the final drive of the game when the Buffs were attempting to force overtime. CU had to throw a “Hail Mary” pass into the end zone with a few seconds left despite entering the drive with two timeouts, neither of which Sanders used.

“If we hit the darn plays we (should) hit, we wouldn’t be asking these questions,” Coach Prime said. “We had the plays, we just didn’t make it happen. We had several plays that we should’ve made happen. We didn’t. They did.

“We’re trying to fix what was broken last week and we’re on to this week. I was there a few days ago, but I’m gone now. I’m into this week now.”

That means game planning for Delaware with two quarterbacks set to see the field.

Salter finished 17-for-28 passing for 159 yards to go with 43 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in his Colorado debut.

Lewis, a consensus five-star recruit and the top high school quarterback to sign with the Buffs in the online rankings era, was battling with Salter to be the starter during the spring and throughout preseason training camp. Lewis graduated high school a year and a half early to arrive in Boulder last winter. He doesn’t turn 18 until Sept. 21.

It’s not just at quarterback, either. Coach Prime said he doesn’t have time to wait around for new pieces to get up to speed.

“If we don’t (see improvement), we gotta try another guy. The roster is pretty deep,” Sanders said. “We have a sense of urgency, we’ve had one since last spring,” Sanders said. “It’s there. The personnel is there. We just gotta make it happen.”
