Mamdani’s campaign aspirations could lack ‘legal muster’ in NYC: Tiana Doescher

Washington Examiner’s Tiana Lowe Doescher said “the best” angle the media could cover in New York City’s mayoral election is how “questionable” Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani’s proposals are.

Mamdani leads in the polls, ahead of opponents, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and independent candidates Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams. The Democratic socialist candidate is campaigning on issues like freezing apartment rent, government-run grocery stores, and free buses.

Doescher, a commentary writer for the Washington Examiner, said the media could cover how Albany, New York’s capital city, “constrains” the power of New York City’s mayor, even if the “nut job” Mamdani gets elected.

“The things that he has wanted to do is questionable whether or not he will have the legal muster, even if he has the votes to say ‘increase corporate tax rate,’ right? The New York City mayor’s constrained in a way other mayors are not,” Doescher said Monday on Fox News’s The Will Cain Show, guest-hosted by Guy Benson.

“But that would involve conceding that he believes in things like state-controlled daycare, like getting rid of bus fares, which will create a $700 million hole in the budget,” Doescher said.

Doescher concluded that Mamdani would have to raise $18 billion to fulfill his campaign promises.

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio endorsed Mamdani Tuesday, saying the Democratic nominee has “the right ideas” for the city. De Blasio said Mamdani won by focusing on “kitchen table issues.”
