Democrats decry alleged ‘scheme’ by Trump to meddle in NYC election

New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani condemned President Donald Trump for allegedly offering a job to one of his opponents in the race.

“When Trump, Cuomo and Adams scheme behind closed doors, they’re not worried about your future or the city you’re struggling to afford,” Mamdani wrote on X Wednesday. “It’s only about their own power.”

Mamdani was referring to a New York Times report that cited White House advisors are considering a position for incumbent Mayor Eric Adams in the Trump administration.

“This is an affront to our democracy,” Mamdani said on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes on Wednesday when asked about the report.

“This is an affront to the values that make so many of us proud to be Americans: That we could choose our own leaders. Not that our leaders pick themselves or their friends.”

As Mamdani condemned the Trump administration for his alleged involvement, other Democratic lawmakers who endorsed him also added credibility to the rumor.

“The evidence couldn’t be clearer: Donald Trump’s choice in this race is Andrew Cuomo,” Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) wrote on X Wednesday.

“Trump is trying to buy this election for his billionaire donors — and Andrew Cuomo is on board with the program. It’s time to unite behind @ZohranKMamdani to protect NYC from Donald Trump,” Nadler wrote.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) did not directly name Trump, but also alerted his X followers to the “oligarchs” involved in the Nov. 4 mayoral race.

“The NYC mayor’s race is a clear example of a corrupt political system: @ZohranKMamdani wins the Democratic primary. The oligarchs spend whatever it takes to defeat him,” Sanders wrote.

“Democratic leadership refuses to endorse him. Together, we will take them all on and elect Zohran as mayor,” Sanders wrote.
