Man who threw knives at Broomfield officers faces assault charges

17th Judicial District officials filed assault charges against a man who allegedly threw knives at Broomfield police officers in an armed standoff last week.

The district attorney charged Brett Carlini, 28, with eight counts of first-degree assault with a weapon, plus a second-degree assault on a peace officer charge, for allegedly starting an armed standoff with authorities at the WoodSpring Suites on Edgeview Drive in Broomfield on Thursday, Aug. 28.

At around 11 a.m. that day, Broomfield Police Department officers arrived to arrest Carlini on several felony arrest warrants, before he became physical.

Police said the suspect, while officers attempted to apprehend him, threw multiple sharp objects at officers. An officer was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

An arrest affidavit showed the suspect threw a knife, hitting — but not injuring — an officer in the chest. He then threw a meat cleaver, injuring an officer who sustained a puncture wound to the leg, according to Denver Gazette news partner 9NEWS.

After the alleged attack, Carlini barricaded himself in a room, prompting the hotel to evacuate and the SWAT team to come assist, according to police.

The suspect was then arrested hours later.

Carlini is next due in court on Sept. 25.
