Movie rundown for the weekend through Sept. 7: ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ opens
OPENING
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” — (Horror, R, 135 minutes). Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren confront mysterious entities during a terrifying case.
“Hamilton” — (Musical, PG-13, 160 minutes). See the filmed version of the Tony, Grammy, Emmy and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway hit, captured live from the Richard Rodgers Theater with the original Broadway cast.
“Light of the World” — (Animation, PG, 91 minutes). Follows Jesus’ life as seen through Apostle John’s eyes.
“Lurker” — (Drama, R, 100 minutes). Matthew, a retail employee, realizes the closer he gets to a budding music star, the more proximity and access become a matter of life and death.
“Pools” — (Comedy, not rated, 99 minutes). When her life falls apart, Kennedy tries to reconnect with her dead father to ask for his permission to live her own life.
“Preparation for the Next Life” — (Drama, R, 115 minutes). While Aishe, a Uyghur woman who migrated to New York City, is working in Chinatown’s underground kitchens, she meets an American soldier named Skinner. When they fall in love, they discover that they could have a better life together than the ones they were destined to live alone.
“Splitsville” — (Comedy, R, 104 minutes). After his wife asks for a divorce, Carey turns to his friends, Paul and Julie, who have an open marriage. However, when Carey crosses the line, everyone’s relationships are thrown into chaos.
“The Threesome” — (Comedy, R, 112 minutes). Two women face unexpected consequences after an impulsive night leads to a threesome.
“Twinless” — (Comedy, R, 100 minutes). Two grieving men form an unlikely friendship when they meet in a support group.
ONGOING
“The Bad Guys 2” — (Action, PG, 104 minutes). Grade: B, Mark Meszoros. Although the Bad Guys are now trying to live their lives as good guys, they are pulled out of retirement by an all-female squad named the Bad Girls to do one last job.
“The Blind” — (Drama, PG-13, 108 minutes). The story of Phil Robertson’s life before becoming a reality TV star and how his demons threatened to tear apart his life with his wife and family.
“The Breakfast Club” 40th Anniversary — (Comedy, R, 97 minutes). After meeting in Saturday detention, five high schoolers discover they have a lot more in common than they thought.
“Caught Stealing” — (Drama, R, 107 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. Hank Thompson, a burned-out ex-baseball player, must navigate a treacherous underground as he fights for survival amid the criminal underbelly of New York City in the 1990s.
“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964) — (Comedy, PG, 95 minutes). After Air Force Gen. Jack Ripper goes insane and thinks the communists are planning to pollute the bodily fluids of the American people, he orders a hydrogen bomb attack on the Soviet Union.
“Eden” — (Thriller, R, 129 minutes). A true story about a group of outsiders who abandon civilization and, after settling on a remote island, quickly learn that their greatest threat is not the brutal climate or deadly wildlife, but each other.
“F1: The Movie” — (Drama, PG-13, 155 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. Sonny Hayes was Formula 1’s most promising driver until the 1990s, when an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he is coming out of retirement to mentor and team up with a hotshot rookie.
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” — (Action, G-13, 115 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. The Fantastic Four must defend Earth while facing their most daunting challenge yet.
“Freakier Friday” — (Comedy, PG, 111 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Twenty-two years after they went through an identity crisis, Tess and Anna discover that lightning can strike twice, as Anna now faces the challenges of merging two families with her daughter and a stepdaughter.
“Guns & Moses” — (Crime, not rated, 94 minutes). After his community in the high desert is attacked, a small-town rabbi becomes an unlikely gunslinger.
“Highest 2 Lowest” — (Action, R, 133 minutes). A titan music mogul is caught up in a life-or-death moral situation when he is targeted with a ransom plot.
“Honey Don’t!” — (Comedy, R, 88 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. A small-town investigator named Honey O’Donahue investigates the strange deaths tied to a mysterious church.
“Jaws” 50th Anniversary” — (Adventure, PG, 124 minutes). The local police chief, a marine biologist and an old seafarer try to hunt down a killer shark that is unleashing chaos on a beach community off Long Island.
“Jurassic World: Rebirth” — (Adventure, PG-13, 134 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Five years after the events of “Jurassic World Dominion,” a team of operatives journeys to an isolated equatorial region in the hope of extracting DNA from three prehistoric creatures that will bring life-saving benefits to humankind.
“Koshedhunga” — (Drama, not rated, 145 minutes). When her husband migrates to the Gulf, exploring unemployment, sacrifice and the price of dreams, Koshedhunga is torn between hardship, love and survival in a village in Nepal.
“Lilo & Stitch” — (Comedy, PG, 108 minutes). Grade: A-, Katie Walsh. A lonely Hawaiian girl asks a fugitive alien to help mend her broken family.
“The Naked Gun” — (Comedy, PG-13, 85 minutes). Grade: B, Katie Walsh. Following in his father’s footsteps, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. is chosen to lead the Police Squad and save the world.
“Nobody 2” — (Action, R, 89 minutes). Grade: C, Katie Walsh. After stopping a home invasion, suburban dad and former assassin Hutch Mansell gets pulled back into his violent past and secrets about his wife and his life are revealed.
“Relay” — (Action, R, 112 minutes). A broker breaks his own rules when a new client’s life is in danger.
“The Roses” — (Drama/Comedy, R, 105 minutes). Grade: B-, Katie Walsh. When Theo’s career takes a nosedive while his wife’s ambitions take off, resentment ignites beneath their facade of a picture-perfect couple.
“Run” — (Thriller, PG-13, no time given). While at a cabin in the woods, Melissa and her friends fight to survive after aliens attack the nation.
“Superman” — (Action, PG-13, 129 minutes). Grade: A-, Katie Walsh. In a world that views truth, justice and the human way as old-fashioned, Superman must try to integrate his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent.
“The Toxic Avenger Unrated” — (Horror, not rated, 102 minutes). A toxic accident turns janitor Winston Gooze into a new evolution hero named The Toxic Avenger.
“Weapons” — (Horror, R, 128 minutes). Grade: A, Katie Walsh. A community is left wondering who or what caused all-but-one child from the same class to go missing on the same night at the same time.
