Legacy player and Colorado native Arden Walker understands importance of honoring the late Bill McCartney | Buffs Gameday

Denver Gazette college sports reporter is joined by Jake Schwanitz from DNVR to preview Colorado's Week 2 matchup against Delaware. After giving their quick thoughts on the loss to Georgia Tech in the season opener, they turn the page to this Saturday and what to expect offensively with both Kaidon Salter and Julian 'JuJu' Lewis set to get snaps at quarterback. Then, the guys discuss how the Buffaloes defense can bounce back after allowing over 300 rushing yards a week ago before giving their players to watch on both sides of the ball and their score prediction.

BOULDER — Deion Sanders couldn’t decide which patch to put on Arden Walker’s jersey.
The Colorado coach doesn’t like to name specific captains, and no Buffaloes player wears the letter “C” on their jerseys. But Coach Prime does have ways to distinguish the top players on his roster. A few players wear the letter “L” for leaders and others wear the letter “D” for dawgs.
To Sanders, Walker is both.
“He’s earned that,” Coach Prime said before the start of the season.
Unsurprisingly, there was a big ‘L” on Walker’s jersey during the season opener — the Denver native’s last in college football. But on the other side of his chest was another patch that means more to him than anyone else on the Buffs roster. It’s the one that says “Mac 82-94” in honor of the late Bill McCartney, the Hall of Fame CU coach and winningest in program history who died earlier this year.
“Even though he’s gone, he’s still here in terms of just the spirit and culture of the team,” Walker said.
It’s not just because Walker grew up in Colorado and starred at Cherry Creek for another legendary Buff in Dave Logan, he’s also a legacy player as his dad, Arthur, was one of the “H-Boys” — the trio of Houston natives that included Kanavis McGhee and Alfred Williams — that played a big role on McCartney’s teams in the late 1980s and early 90s.

“I heard the Coach Mac stories growing up,” Walker said with a smile. “My dad always gave me some interesting stories and even the motivational things he said. Being able to educate my guys on just how much Coach Mac meant to the program and how much of a blessing he was… also he was a man of God like Coach Prime, so there’s some similarities (with) speaking life into players and making an impact on and off the field.”

That’s why coming home has been so impactful for Walker, who began his college career at Missouri before transferring back to play for the Buffs in 2023. Just like his dad did, Arden is getting a chance to play for a coach who he thinks could have a similar impact on the Buffs program, and not just in terms of making the program relevant nationally.
“Showing how much God is part of his identity, I think Coach Mac (was) the same way. I feel like I see it now, especially since my dad talked about it,” Walker said.
On the field, though, there aren’t many players more important to success this season than Walker. He’s not just a leader on the defense, but also someone who is going to be relied upon to have a breakout season on the defensive line. It’s already year three in the program for Walker and his progress has been steady since he arrived on campus, but he wants to seize this moment with all he’s got.
Colorado junior defensive end Arden Walker (53) warms up before a game against Arizona on Oct. 19, 2024 at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
“It blew by fast. It’s been a blessing. Just in terms of development, it’s really getting to a point where now is really my time to shine,” Walker said. “I can’t thank God enough for it. I’m just looking to step up and be the player I’m supposed to be for this team and help my teammates to elevate their games, too.”
He played in all 13 games last year, starting the final two, and led CU defensive linemen in tackles with 33, including 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was one of Pro Football Focus’ favorite edge rushers in the Big 12.

More than individual stats, Walker wants to be remembered for one thing: helping lead the program he cares about so much back to the top, while playing for a Hall of Fame coach.
Just like dad did.
“Black and gold runs in my veins,” he said. “The impact my father had on me, he’s been a coach forever for me, as well. I think some of these leadership roles and the aspects he’s preached to me my whole life is now really on display. You can’t really beat it.”
