Near the bustling Denver Tech Center stretch of I-25, about 120 people — and the Nuggets’ mascot — are rappelling a 19-story hotel in the Denver Tech Center this week.
Put on by Over the Edge, an urban rappelling experience company, and the Cancer League of Colorado, tickets to rappel down the Kimpton Claret Hotel benefiting the nonprofit are going for $1,000. In doing so, Cancer League of Colorado has raised around $150,000 thus far for cancer research and cancer patient services in the state, according to board member John Snow.
The partnership between the two extends back several years and previously let ticket buyers rappel down McGregor Square and other downtown Denver locations. This year, the DTC-area, high-end hotel was an easy choice logistically, for its size, location and more, Zach Young, a ropes technician, said.
“People (can be) cool as a cucumber all the way to they are terrified, but really want to do it for personal reasons,” Young said. On Thursday, one participant had lost a friend to the disease, spurring their descent down the hotel exterior.
Curious hotel guests, friends and family watched from their room windows and cheered from across the street. Later in the day, Nuggets’ mascot Rocky perfected the art of harness wearing with a full-tailed costume.
The event is ongoing until Saturday and those interested can learn more on the Over the Edge Denver website.
