CU Buffs vs. Delaware | 3 takeaways as Deion Sanders, Colorado secure first win of 2025
The Associated Press
BOULDER — Colorado has notched one in the win column in 2025.
The Buffaloes took care of business in front of 50,341 fans on a sunny day at Folsom Field, taking down newly minted FBS program Delaware 31-7.
CU bounced back from a loss to Georgia Tech in last week’s season opener and moved on to Friday’s Big 12 opener at Houston.
Here are three takeaways from the win:
QB controversy in Boulder?
It’s almost as if Deion Sanders was inviting more questions than answers at quarterback.
Intending to play both starter Kaidon Salter and five-star freshman phenom Julian ‘JuJu’ Lewis, it was neither who stole the show.
After Salter and Lewis had two series each to begin the game, Ryan Staub entered for the final drive of the first half and led a surprising touchdown drive to give the Buffs a 17-7 lead into the break.
It was Staub who got the chance to begin the second half and he only needed three plays to get the Buffs into the end zone again, remaining in the game until CU was up 31-7 as Salter returned in the fourth quarter.
Staub led the way with 157 passing yards on 10 attempts, including two touchdowns. Salter finished 13-for-16 for 102 yards, including 26 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown, while Lewis was just 2-for-4 for 8 yards.
Defense vulnerable through the air
Last week, the Buffs couldn’t stop the run. This week, it was the passing game that bit them.
After losing its starting quarterback in Week 1, Delaware was surprisingly successful through the air with backup Nick Minnicucci, who wasn’t necessarily efficient but was able to make enough chunk plays to move the ball downfield regularly for the Blue Hens.
Minnicucci finished with 312 passing yards and one touchdown. Delaware missed a few chances to put points on the board with multiple drives ending inside the CU 10-yard line.
Special teams remain special
Coach Prime was so pleased with his special teams unit that he sent them all out to the midweek press conference this week. He may do the same after another stellar performance by that unit on Saturday.
Kansas transfer Damon Greaves continues to shine at punter with five punts averaging 50 yards with three inside the 20-yard line, including one downed inside the 1-yard line.
In the kicking game, Alejandro Mata remained perfect with a 28-yard field goal and five extra points.
Kickoff specialist Buck Buchanan had six touchbacks to give him 11 through two games after the Buffs had just 15 in all of 2024.
