Bo Nix, Pat Surtain among best-selling NFL jerseys entering 2025 season | Broncos notebook

Broncos Saints Football

The Broncos have two of the best-selling NFL jerseys entering the 2025 season.

The NFLPA on Monday released its top 50 rankings from jersey sales between March 1 and July 31. Quarterback Bo Nix came in at No. 9 overall. Cornerback Pat Surtain entered the list at No. 40. They were the only Broncos players to crack the top 50.

Nix established himself as a Broncos Country favorite after a breakout 2024 season. He set franchise rookie records for the most passing touchdowns (29), completions (376) and passing yards (3,775) in leading Denver to a playoff berth. However, in a 20-12 home win Sunday over the Titans, Nix mostly struggled with two interceptions thrown and a lost fumble.

Surtain is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His strong play continued in the season opener. Surtain did not allow a catch as the nearest defender on his 34 coverage snaps against Tennessee, according to Next Gen Stats. He lined up against No. 1 Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley on 27 of his 32 routes (84%). Ridley finished with just four catches for 27 yards.

The NFLPA sourced its official jersey sales data as reported by Fanatics.

Payton wins milestone

Sean Payton reached a significant personal milestone against the Titans.

The Broncos coach reached 171 career victories to surpass Mike Shanahan and Tom Coughlin on the NFL’s regular-season wins list. Payton is now tied for the 17th most in NFL history with 171.

Payton and Shanahan, a two-time Super Bowl winning-coach with the Broncos, are both graduates of Eastern Illinois University and share a unique connection.

“I don’t know where that master (wins) list is,” Payton said on his Monday teleconference call with reporters. “It’s not something (where) you look at it. … But it does put in perspective maybe how fortunate (I am), how long the career has been, and then how many good players I’ve been able to coach. Let’s hope I have a chance to win a second Super Bowl like Mike Shanahan. This is his year (or) the next year, but very soon he’s going in the (Pro Football) Hall of Fame.”

McMillian recounts sack

Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian recorded one of six sacks by the Broncos in their season-opening win over the Titans. The starting nickel explained how it came together during a Monday call with reporters.

“We showed ‘blitz middle’ and two guys dropped (out) which caused the running back to pinch in,” McMillian said. “He didn’t actually see me coming off the edge. Then I had Nik Bonitto; he helped me free up by holding that tight end. … I was able to come in free. The QB didn’t see me coming and I just made a play on the ball.”

McMillian forced a fumble that was recovered by rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron. McMillian beat out Barron for the starting nickel spot in Week 1. McMillian played 31 of 57 defensive snaps against Tennessee. Barron appeared on 21 defensive snaps.

“Nothing different. Just showing them what I’ve always done since I stepped foot in the building,” McMillian said. “A guy that’s going to get the dirty work done. Make sure everybody is in place and be the quarterback of the defense. Communicate and just play my game, fast (and) physical.”
