Trump celebrates West Point ‘smartly’ axing ceremony for Tom Hanks

President Donald Trump said Monday the U.S. Military Academy at West Point made an “important move” by cutting a ceremony for actor Tom Hanks.

The West Point Association of Graduates pulled the plug on its ceremony set for Sept. 25, awarding Hanks the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award. The association will still give the Forest Gump actor this award, though no specific reason has been provided for the ceremony’s cancellation.

Trump said West Point “smartly” chose to not host the ceremony and the academy is “getting greater all the time!”

“We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!! Hopefully the Academy Awards, and other Fake Award Shows, will review their Standards and Practices in the name of Fairness and Justice. Watch their DEAD RATINGS SURGE!” Trump said on Truth Social.

The Washington Examiner has contacted the West Point Association of Graduates for comment.

Trump’s disdain for Hanks could stem from the recurring Saturday Night Live character Hanks plays: a Trump supporter named Doug who sports a heavy Southern accent. Doug’s appearance at SNL’s 50th anniversary special drew criticism in February, as many X users disliked the portrayal of Republicans.

In April 2016, Hanks said he didn’t think Trump would win the presidential election, saying Trump would become president “when spaceships come down filled with dinosaurs in red capes.” Trump went on to win the 2016 election against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Trump is no stranger to criticizing the entertainment industry. He said he “absolutely” loved the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in July, and predicted other late-night shows will also get axed soon.
