Aurora officer involved in fatal shooting had credibility questioned by judge in 2019 burglary case

An Aurora police officer who shot and killed a man after a confrontation in late August had his credibility questioned after a judge found his testimony “not credible” in a 2019 burglary case, 9NEWS Investigates has confirmed.

In that case, the judge concluded the testimony of the officer and his partner was “inconsistent” with body camera video of their interactions with a suspect in the case. The judge also wrote that “their other testimony regarding what happened when the video is not on is not credible and the court is not willing to believe any of it.”

The officer is on paid leave while a multi-agency team investigates what happened around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 along East Sixth Avenue near Billings Street.

According to Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain, the incident began when the officer attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation. That driver rear-ended another car. The officer, Chamberlain said, ordered the man out of his vehicle.
