“Extremist network” reportedly radicalized 16-year-old suspect in Colorado school shooting

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified Desmond Holly, 16, as the suspected shooter involved in the tragic incident that took place at Evergreen High School on September 10. Holly was a student of Evergreen High School, and he died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Two students were shot and are hospitalized in critical condition at last report.

Law enforcement has reported that Holly is alleged to have used a handgun – a revolver – in the shooting, reloading multiple times while searching for new targets. An effective lock down of the school reportedly prevented him from accessing many students who remained in the building.

“The suspect’s gun was fired a lot,” said a spokesperson. It was still unknown how many rounds were shot. Parts of the building, including windows and lockers, reportedly sustained damage.

“We can’t say yet if this feels more targeted or random,” said a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, noting that the many shots fired make it feel like “it could be a bit of both.”

The Evergreen High School School Resource Officer has reportedly been on medical leave, with multiple part-time SRO’s handling the school. There was no SRO present at the time of the shooting, as the SRO had reportedly left to respond to an unrelated call.

Information has not been released about who owned the gun used in the attack.

The Denver Gazette reports that “preliminary investigations have found that Holly was ‘radicalized by some extremist network.'”
