Tragedy struck in Colorado on September 10, as a school shooting unfolded at Evergreen High School, which is located in the small town of Evergreen and about 18 miles southwest of downtown Denver.
Here are 7 things to know about that tragic event:
- The shooting started around 12:30 p.m., with the first emergency alert report about the shooting sent out about 30 minutes later, per a report from Denver Gazette.
- A male teen was responsible for the shooting, with that teen dying of self-inflicted injuries on Wednesday night. The suspect has since been identified as 16-year-old Desmond Holly.
- The alleged shooter was one of three students who were critically injured in the incident, with injured students transported to a local hospital. All of those injured were minors.
- The weapon used in the shooting was a handgun described as a revolver. The suspect reportedly reloaded to fire more rounds multiple times.
- The response involved more than 100 law enforcement personnel, with the school evacuated cleared about an hour and a half after the first report of the incident. A School Resource Officer was not at the scene when the shooting started, with Evergreen High School having several part-time SRO’s manage the facility while the full-time SRO is on medical leave.
- An official motive related to the shooting has not yet been released. Some sources indicate the boy was influence by an “extremist group.”
- Evergreen is an unincorporated town located in mountainous terrain with a population of about 9,307 people, though more live in the surrounding area. The student population at the high school involved in the shooting was listed as 931 during the 2023-2024 school year.
