Report of man with gun near Boulder schools was false, police say

A false report of a man with a gun in the area resulted in a Boulder high school and middle school locking down on Thursday morning, according to the Boulder Police Department.

Fairview High School and nearby Southern Hills Middle School went into lock down around 11 a.m., officials said on social media.

The police department had investigated a report of a man with a gun near the high school, police said.

The schools are located in south Boulder.

At around 11:30 a.m., Boulder police issued a shelter-in-place for a half a mile around the school, as authorities continue searching for a suspect.

At noon, police said authorities believe there is no longer a threat.

Police said officers found the reported suspect, who “was wearing a weighted vest and carrying his cell phone in his hand, which likely contributed to what the person who called in the possible threat saw,” police said.

“Officers are still searching the school out of an abundance of caution and should be done soon,” police added.

Class and extra curricular activities, including sports activities, were canceled for the rest of the day at both Fairview High School and Southern Hills Middle School, a Boulder Valley School District spokesperson said.

Bear Creek Elementary, Mesa Elementary, Community Montessori and Summit Charter Middle School were placed on secure lock down. They all have resumed normal operations.

“The schools have been searched out of an abundance of caution and nothing was found,” Boulder police said on social media.

“We always encourage anyone who thinks they see something suspicious to call us,” police said. “We understand the community fear today and are thankful this did not turn out to be anyone with any ill intent.”

Colorado school districts remain on high alert following a school shooting Wednesday at Evergreen High School, which left two students critically injured and the suspected shooter dead.

Boulder police said the man wearing the heavy vest was interviewed.

Authorities noted he “understood that this and the shooting in Jefferson County yesterday likely led to the report today.”
