What they’re saying about Broncos stadium move to Burnham Yard
The Denver Broncos and the city of Denver confirmed Tuesday what media organizations have been speculating about for weeks: the preferred site for a new stadium is Denver’s Burnham Yard about a mile away from Empower Field at Mile High.
Several Broncos players — as well as state, city and county officials — reacted Tuesday to the Burnham Yard plans.
Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto on X: “Huge news! Greg and Carrie Penner continue to invest in our team and city!”
Defensive end Zach Allen: “This is awesome! Love this investment from Greg and Carrie and so excited to keep playing in the best city for the best fans!”
Inside linebacker Alex Singleton: “Best city and best owners in the world, love what will always be next for this team!”
Kicker Wil Lutz: “Big things happening! Excited for the future at Burnham Yard!”
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston: “On every front, this was our dream come true outcome.”
City of Lone Tree Mayor Marissa Harmon (the city talked to the Broncos about a possible stadium deal): “We are grateful to the Denver Broncos organization for the time and thoughtful consideration they gave to Lone Tree as a potential home for their new stadium.” Harmon added: “Their interest affirmed what we already know — that our Lone Tree City Center is a special place with incredible potential. … Go Broncos, and best of luck this season!”
Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO J.J. Ament: “This is big news for our entire region. The historic Burnham Yards is a great location for this new transformational development by the Walton-Penner Family and the Denver Broncos. We’re thrilled that the City, State, and Denver Water worked together with the team to make this site available for what will be an extraordinary new entertainment, housing and business district anchored around the NFL’s best new stadium.”
Hanna Scovill, senior economist of the Metro Denver Economic Development Council: “Our existing stadium already generates hundreds of millions in economic impact each year … With a retractable roof, Denver could host 50% more events annually, bringing even greater visitor spending, job creation, and national visibility to our city.”
Denver Police Department Chief Ron Thomas: “As a lifelong football fan, resident of Denver, and longtime Denver Broncos season ticket holder, I am ecstatic at the proposal of the Broncos’ stadium staying in the core of Denver. This not only means a great deal to me, but also to our officers who work the games and engage in positive interactions with the fans.”
Gov. Jared Polis via X: “Today is a thrilling day for Colorado! Denver, Colorado, is the heart of Broncos Country, and today we are one step closer to ensuring that it remains that way. It’s been an honor to partner with the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group throughout this process to seize an amazing opportunity to unlock new, unprecedented private investment in our beloved football team and our capital city. The Broncos are as core to the fabric of our state as their future site at Burnham Yard is to how our state was founded and thrived over 150 years ago.”
Denver Gazette reporters Kyle Frederickson, Bernadette Berdychowski, Deborah Grigsby and Dennis Huspeni contributed to this report.
