Evan Engram off to slow start in Denver after two games | Broncos notebook

Tight end Evan Engram has light production so far with the Broncos.
He played in 43% of the team’s overall offensive snaps in Week 1 and exited with a calf injury. Engram logged three catches for 21 yards against the Titans.
Engram, against the Colts, hit 500 NFL career receptions in the fourth quarter and earned a first down with 12 yards on Denver’s final offensive possession. But it was his lone catch of the day on just two targets from quarterback Bo Nix.
Were the Colts doing anything specific to limit Engram?
“Nothing, really. Sometimes the ball finds you, sometimes it doesn’t,” Nix told reporters on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. “We’ve got game plan plays for (Engram) and sometimes they just do a good job taking it away. You’ve got to progress. He’s No. 1 quite often. And I thought they did a good job, as a whole, taking away No. 1 (play options). They played, got in our face, which is also why the run game was working, because they could tell they were a little bit on the pass game and wanted to take receivers away.”
The Broncos signed Engram, 31, in free agency to a two-year contract with $16.5 million guaranteed. In training camp, teammates and coaches raved about his preparation and communication while returning from multiple injuries last season with the Jaguars.
But Adam Trautman has played the majority of snaps at tight end over the past two weeks — 44 (58%) and 36 (62%). His size advantage over Engram is an asset to Denver’s revamped running game. Trautman also caught a 2-yard touchdown against the Colts.
The Broncos expected a significant role for Engram in his ninth NFL season. It has yet to materialize heading into their first road divisional game, against the Chargers on Sunday. Engram enters the matchup with four catches for 33 yards this season.
Mack injured
Chargers star edge rusher Khalil Mack suffered an elbow injury in a win Monday night, 20-9, and was ruled out for return. Los Angeles faces a quick turnaround to host the Broncos on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
The injury occurred on the final play of the first quarter. Mack made a diving tackle attempt on Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker. Mack’s left arm got caught between Turner and Chargers linebacker Troy Dye. Mack’s forearm bent the wrong way, and he was in obvious pain leaving the field. Mack later returned to the sideline with his left arm in a sling.

Burrow status
The Broncos will catch a break in Week 4 at home against the Bengals.
Cincinnati star quarterback Joe Burrow was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Burrow is expected to miss at least three months following surgery for a turf toe injury, according to NFL.com. The injury took place in a 31-27 Bengals win Sunday over the Bengals with Burrow replaced by backup quarterback Jake Browning.
