Broncos WR Marvin Mims questionable vs. Bengals with hip injury but TE Evan Engram to return

ENGLEWOOD – Just when it looked as if the Broncos had a fully healthy 53-man roster, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. popped up Saturday on the injury report.

Mims, who was listed as a full participant in practice Thursday and Friday, was listed as limited in Saturday’s workout due to a hip injury and is questionable for Monday night’s game against Cincinnati at Empower Field at Mile High. It’s unclear what exactly happened with Mims in Saturday’s practice.

On Friday, all players on Denver’s 53-man roster were listed as full participants. And on Saturday, no player other than Mims was given an injury designation for Monday’s game. That includes tight end Evan Engram, who suffered a back injury in a 29-28 loss Sept. 14 at Indianapolis and sat out last Sunday’s 23-20 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Just blessed honestly to be back in the lineup,’’ Engram told The Denver Gazette after Saturday’s practice at Broncos Park. “I just love playing football. I’m excited to come out Monday night with this team. We’ve got to respond. We’ve had it tough the last two weeks. It’s time for us to get over that hump and get some positive wins going, and it starts Monday night.”

Tackle Mike McGlinchey said having Engram back at full strength is vital for the Broncos (1-2) against the Bengals (2-1).

“I think it’s going to be huge for us,’’ McGlinchey said. “I’m ready to see Evan healthy and flying around. He’s such a talented player. … I’m excited to see what he’s capable of (Monday) and I know (Denver coach) Sean (Payton) is too. He’s a huge piece of bringing him in here this offseason and I think he’s just about to get going and really help us win.”

Engram, a nine-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a two-year, $23 million contract with the Broncos last March. While he has gotten off to a slow start, with four catches for 33 yards in the first two games, Payton said that “with him on the field, we’re a better offense.”

Come Monday, it will be seen whether the Broncos have Mims on the field. He is third in the NFL in punt-return average at 17.2 yards and seventh in kickoff-return average at 27.6. He has six catches for 40 yards.

If Mims can’t play or is limited, it likely would mean more snaps for rookie receiver Pat Bryant. He has two catches for 18 yards this season.

McGlinchey seeks offensive identity

Three games into the season, the Broncos are continuing to seek their offensive identity.

“I think we have to find one,’’ McGlinchey said.

The Broncos rank No. 19 in the NFL in total offense and No. 17 in scoring. They have been bogged down by penalties, including having 10 for 90 yards overall against the Chargers.

“We’ve got to play penalty free, play smart, play tough,’’ McGlinchey said. “I think it’s all about within the details of what we’re doing and cleaning up those things that caused us harm the last couple of weeks.”

McGlinchey pointed to the Broncos having issues on first and second down.

“Last week, we averaged third-and-11 to go (on third downs), which is impossible to win football games,’’ he said.

McGlinchey stressed the importance of Monday’s game.

“We’re certainly trying to get our footing in terms of where we’re going this season,’’ he said. “We know how important it is to get a win. Certainly, 2-2 is a lot better than 1-3.

McLaughlin over Badie?

Payton said Saturday that running back Jaleel McLaughlin is “doing extremely well” in practice but would not say whether he could be activated Monday over Tyler Badie as Denver’s third running back behind starter J.K. Dobbins and rookie RJ Harvey.

Badie was active over McLaughlin in each of the first three games but played just two offensive snaps against the Chargers and had no touches.

“Each week we evaluate that game-to-game,’’ Payton said about who will be the third back.

Briefly

Free-agent cornerback A.J. Woods came to Broncos Park for a workout last Wednesday and was thrilled to be signed later in the day to the practice squad. “It just happened quick, man,’’ Woods said. “I thought I had a good workout and (general manager George Paton) came up to me and said he was going to sign me,’’ Woods said. “I was excited.” Woods was undrafted in 2024 out of Pittsburgh but won a Super Bowl ring last season while on Philadelphia’s practice squad. … The Broncos have scored just 10 points this season in three first quarters. Payton called it “important we start fast” Monday, saying the Broncos need to “take advantage” of having a “good crowd behind us.” … The Bengals listed as out for Monday former Broncos tight end Noah Fant (concussion) and rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart (ankle).

Nik Bonitto eyes even bigger sack season, perhaps topping Von Miller's Broncos record

ENGLEWOOD – Nik Bonitto has set a goal for this season. If all goes well, he might need to make an adjustment to it.  The Broncos outside linebacker had 13.5 sacks in his breakout season of 2024. That helped him earlier this month get a four-year, $106 million contract extension.  “I want to get more […]
