CDOT warns of heavy leaf peeping traffic along I-70 mountain corridor
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has issued a warning for heavy leaf peeping traffic along the I-70 mountain corridor this weekend.
CDOT said to expect a lot of traffic along the stretch of I-70, with extreme congestion along US 285, especially between South Park and Denver, with drivers heading to Kenosha Pass.
In a Facebook post, CDOT said drivers should know the following heading into the prime leaf peeping weekend:
- Expect heavy traffic heading westbound late morning through early afternoon and eastbound from late morning well into the evening
- Leave early or late in the day to avoid the worst congestion
- Be cautious when seeking alternate routes, as local roads such as Guanella Pass cannot accommodate interstate-level traffic
- Pack patience and allow extra travel time – delays are inevitable
- Check COtrip.org or download the COtrip Planner app to stay up to date on travel conditions
- Visit GoI70.com to check the traffic forecast for this weekend
Traffic heading into Georgetown from I-70 was even turned around from entering the town for a period today. According to a post from the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office at 1:45 p.m., the town was so filled with leaf-peeping traffic that all traffic in town was at a standstill. Residents of Georgetown had to provide proof of residence to traffic controllers.
In an update at 3:10 p.m., the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office announced that the closure had been lifted for I-70 traffic entering Georgetown at exit 228.
